Dr Katherine Holzhauser

MBBS (Hons), FRACGP
As a North Queensland local that belongs to a family of health care providers, I have been proud to be able to stay in the region as a family general practitioner.

Choosing to complete my medical degree at James Cook University in Townsville, I had the fortunate opportunity to enjoy many regional and rural placements – from the Tablelands to Mt Isa and everything in between.  I was invited to complete an Honours Degree in my senior years; with my Thesis focus on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in Northern communities which was published and used to help facilitate screening of women at risk within our community. I graduated with First Class Honours and a University Medal.

I went on to complete my junior years at the Cairns Base Hospital, later working there as a medical registrar and then as a Coronary Care Registrar at the Cairns Private Hospital.  I chose my speciality area of General Practice early on in my career so that I could elect to stay in the region and have a family.

I started working at McLeod Street Medical in 2014 as a registrar and was happy to stay on and complete my Fellowship of the Royal College of Practitioners (FRACGP) in 2015.  I now work in the consulting room that I used to see my own GP, which in itself is a privilege to have come full circle from attending the practice as a patient to now being one of the Principle owners at McLeod Street Medical.

I am passionate about General Practice and believe that we can provide a cradle to grave level of care and support for our patients. I enjoy being able to help patients navigate through our health care system. I believe strongly in educating our future doctors, having previously held the role of Senior Lecturer and  Clinical Year Coordinator (Year 4) but now am happy to simply enjoy the teaching of medical students in General Practice.

Outside of work I have two young children and am fortunate to work full time because of the tireless support of my husband.  I enjoy family time, gardening, playing the piano, cooking and playing indoor netball.

Dr Bruce Bilbe

MBBS FRACGP D.C.H

I graduated from Sydney University in 1971 and have had the honour of working in Cairns as a GP for the last 41 years.  During this time, I have had the privilege of being a part of so many patient’s lives, building strong relationships through the generations of families.

The McLeod Street team welcomed me on board in 1998 as one of the Partner’s in the business. Now in semi-retirement, I made the decision to step down from the role of Partner and start relishing in the luxuries that the ‘grey nomads’ lifestyle has to offer.

Although I am in the final years of my General Practice career (as at 2018), my commitment to patient care is unwavering.

Throughout my career, I have developed the strong belief that medications are not the fundamental management of illness and medical problems.  Lifestyle and behavioral actions also play a significant role in contributing to good health.

Dr Merodia Rodgers

MBBS(QLD) FRACGP

Growing up in Kuranda, I am a proud local of North Queensland and love the lifestyle that Cairns has to offer.

After graduating high school, I went on to study medicine at James Cook University in Townsville and Cairns.

McLeod Street Medical welcomed me into their practice in 2009 as a registrar.  Having then completed my GP Fellowship training in 2012, I was fortunate enough to continue on with the supportive team at McLeod St.

Over the years, I’m privileged to have been a part of so many patient’s lives and develop strong patient-doctor relationships. I find the wide spectrum and diversity of medicine within the practice to be enjoyable and rewarding.

I have a special interest in Women’s health and am passionate about empowering women through contraceptive choices (including Mirena insertion). I have also worked at True Reproductive & Sexual Health clinic one day a week since 2015.

I live with my tradesman husband and two young boys – often working shorter days to do the ‘mum thing’. Also living with us are our three Great Danes (which we breed). Outside of work I enjoy cooking, running and fishing with the family.

Dr Omar Khan

MBBS(QLD) B.Med Sci(SYD)

My family background is typically Australian: an Indian dad, an Australian mum…with Greek and English thrown in! Growing up in Sydney, I studied Medical Science at Sydney Uni, before moving north to study Medicine at the Uni of Qld. Something kept luring me further up the coast, however, and I completed my final two years of medical school based in Townsville and Cairns. After experiencing regional life, the incredible scenery, the friendliness of the people, and the fascinating, unique aspects of medicine in the tropics, I knew I had found my home. Falling in love and having two young boys in Cairns just makes me even more sure!

Over the last 10 years working in Cairns as a GP I have increasingly delighted in becoming part of so many peoples’ lives. Seeing mothers through their pregnancies, then watching their young children grow and develop personalities of their own is an absolute privilege. Caring for people in their final days has also been deeply rewarding.

I believe in empowering patients through education as much as possible, and making joint decisions using common sense, as well as the best current medical evidence. I don’t think we, as doctors, have all the answers, and am happy to admit when I am unsure about something! I don’t think everything can be fixed with a pill.

Over the years, I have developed a special interest in Sports and Musculoskeletal Medicine. I have completed a Graduate Certificate in Sports Medicine through the University of Qld, and currently combine general practice at McLeod St with work alongside local Orthopaedic Specialists managing acute injuries. I also assist these surgeons in the operating theatre every week.

Outside of work I am a passionate gardener with my veggie garden taking over the street! I love hiking, camping, cycling and Ultimate Disc. I also love cooking, and exploring the worlds of wine and craft beer! I am constantly striving to be a better dad and a better doctor.

Dr Caroline Yates

MBBS, FRACGP

Caroline has just returned home to Cairns after spending 12 months working in a remote mining community in Central Qld.

I am a proud Cairns local, having completed all my schooling here, I was then fortunate enough to be accepted into the first cohort to study medicine at James Cook University in Townsville. During my years at medical school I was able to complete placements throughout the Atherton Tablelands, in Mt Isa and attended outreach clinics to Cape York. I completed my final two years at Cairns Base Hospital, gaining my Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2005.

I completed my internship at Nambour General hospital on the Sunshine Coast, before making an urban change to work in Emergency medicine in Melbourne at The Alfred Hospital. I also completed rotation in Paediatrics and Psychiatry. This time allowed me to gain experience working in a tertiary emergency facility prior to spending a year working in rural emergency departments doing GP and emergency work in NSW, Victoria and the Northern Territory before backpacking through Europe for 6 months. This time allowed me to make the decision to choose General practice as my specialty as I loved caring for the whole family and being involved in their continuity of care.

Knowing I wanted to live and raise my family in Cairns was a big driving factor for me to return home to Cairns in late 2008 to commence my General practice training, completing my Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 2009, and then practicing as a local Cairns GP until mid 2017. I also enjoyed balancing my days consulting in General Practice with surgical assisting at Cairns Private Hospital.

I have recently spent 12 months working as the only GP in a remote mining town in central Qld. Being the only available doctor exposed me to all facets of medicine and general practice and provided the clinical challenge I needed after working part-time for a few years after the arrival of my three children. It was incredible rewarding knowing the difference I was able to provide in a community that had not had a regular GP for many years and confirmed how important continuity of patient care in General practice is for good outcomes. The knowledge and expertise I gained working in occupational and workplace medicine in the mining industry was invaluable.

I am passionate about General Practice and am a strong advocate for whole patient care with a family GP who can manage your chronic health conditions, acute complaints and overall wellbeing. This involves helping the patient to access appropriate allied health services, specialist medical practitioners, and implement lifestyle changes to improve their health.

Outside of work I am a very busy Mum to three young children (including three year old twins). I enjoy hiking the Red Arrow, taking the children to all our beautiful local beaches, parks and waterholes and watching them thrive and grow. I love cooking, travelling, reading and enjoying good food with family and friends. I have recently taken up scooter-riding with my six and three year olds along the Esplanade.
